This weekend closes the book on the unofficial first half of the season in both the National and American Leagues and every major league team wants to finish on an upbeat note. Here is a look at the Top Trends in baseball this upcoming weekend and how they might impact the races in both leagues. We’ll start by seeing what is happening in the senior circuit.

The New York Mets have quietly gotten back into the NL East race, winning six games in a row, to pull within 1.5 games of front-running Philadelphia. The Chicago Cubs and Milwaukee Brewers have taken it upon themselves this week to raise the stakes and neither can afford any slip-ups this weekend, either trying to build or shorten the lead in the NL Central. The Los Angeles Dodgers lost a game to second place Florida to start four game series and will need to keep pace with Arizona who is in the City of Brotherly Love, after squeaking by Washington.
In the American League, Tampa Bay is facing some real adversity for the first time in 2008 having lost four in a row. The conditions are hardly ripe for a quick turnaround for the Rays, who are 3-27 in July road games the last three years and have had a devil of a time in Cleveland, with nine losses in a row and counting. Baltimore has lost five straight and heads to Fenway Park, not exactly a place to get well. Detroit’s trying to get back into AL Central race and can’t afford another loss to Minnesota if their hopes are to be realized. Oakland will have a chance to narrow the gap in the AL West, facing heated rival Los Angeles, who has the best road record in baseball at 29-17, up +11.9 units.
Here are the top trends that should be in play for most of the games this weekend from a variety of series:
